How to split expenses with flatmates and friends, fairly
Shared flats and group trips run on lots of small payments: someone buys groceries, someone pays the Wi-Fi, someone books the cab. Without a record, someone always ends up paying more.
Rules that keep it fair
- Agree the split once: equal, by room size or by use.
- Record every shared payment the same day: who paid, how much, for what.
- Settle up regularly, weekly or monthly, not once a year.
- Let everyone see the same record, so there's nothing to argue about.
Doing it with KEEPR
Create a group in KEEPR's Circle for your flat or trip and share records with it. Everyone in the group sees the same records. For money between two of you, share a record with that friend: they confirm it, and when it's paid you both mark it settled. Use the group chat to coordinate, and the Borrow board to share things instead of buying doubles.
Tips
- Note what each payment was for: “groceries, 3 Oct” beats a bare ₹1,240.
- Big one-off purchases (a fridge, a microwave)? Note who owns what for when someone moves out.
- Keep personal and shared spending apart; KEEPR's Expenses section is for your own spending.
